Confident Communication: 5 Communication Tips to Maximize Your Shift
Click here to read the original article on InDemand's blog.
Effective communication is essential in everything we do as humans; relationships, careers, social gatherings, you name it. So it's no surprise that communication is the secret ingredient that keeps InDemand running like a well-oiled machine.
But, remember: there's a distinction between poor communication and effective communication. The former will cause confusion and chaos, while the ladder will inspire productivity—especially in retail merchandising. That's why every member of an InDemand team, from Supervisors to Field Reps., must be able to communicate clearly with one another. In doing so, every shift will be a constructive step in the right direction.
So, how does one communicate effectively? Well, there are many aspects involved, including active listening, asking questions, and honest feedback. Below, we'll break down a few communication tips that will help maximize your shift.
Listen, Listen, Listen
In retail merchandising, active listening can make or break a shift. Whether it's a pre-shift meeting or completing a task, you should always be listening for instructions. But, most importantly, your ears should constantly be alert for your coworkers' where-a-bouts. If you're not listening, and someone says they're walking behind you with tools or large objects, a collision is likely to occur. For your own safety and the team's welfare, listen, listen, listen.
Speak Up!
You heard me, speak up! Communication isn't a one-way street, which means Supervisors aren't the only ones who should be talking. Whether you have an idea to maximize productivity, a concern about the project, or need clarification about a task, don't be afraid to speak up. Your Supervisors are here to listen and answer questions!
Honest Feedback
You've heard it a million times, "Honesty is the best policy." And this is especially true when engaging with your coworkers. Let your coworkers know when they're doing an excellent job, and provide constructive criticism if a coworker is struggling. But remember: always be nice! There's no place for harsh criticism in a work environment.
Take Notes
Whether it's mental notes or old-school handwritten notes, write it down! It's a fact that writing things down commits them to memory. But most importantly, if you're a supervisor, always record your progress in Cruxos! This creates effective communication between the team, our corporate office, and the client.
Have Fun
Believe it or not, effective communication makes work more enjoyable. Not only is it fun when the entire team is clicking, but the best part of work is building friendships. Talk to your coworkers to get to know them; find out their hobbies, learn about their families, and ask questions. The closer your team becomes, the more fun you'll have!
